Message from the President

Earnings Results for FY2023

President,CEO
Katsumi Kuroiwa

With the goal of clarifying the social significance of the existence of the business, the Group established a new Corporate Philosophy, "Continue to pursue the potential of entertainment," in the fiscal year ended March 2023. Based on this philosophy, the Group formulated and announced avex vision 2027 Medium-term Management Plan in May 2022. Under the priority strategy: "Seek to discover and develop 'beloved' intellectual property in many different regions and fields," which was set out in the Medium-term Management Plan, the Group stepped up its investment to discover, develop, create and acquire new IP in each business field.

Meanwhile, COVID-19 pandemic restrictions imposed on public have been eased and, impacting the Music Business, the number of large-scale concerts has increased. Because of these and other facts, net sales stood at 121.561 billion yen (up 23.5% year on year) while operating profit came to 3.385 billion yen (up 31.1% year on year) and profit attributable to owners of parent came to 2.742 billion yen (up 198.2% year on year) as gain on sale of investment securities, etc. was recorded as extraordinary profit.

*IP=Intellectual Property

Overview by segment

Music Business: Operating profit decreased due to reasons such as investment in the creation of IP despite an increase in net sales mainly in live concerts and merchandising following the increase in the number of large live performances.
Anime & Visual Content Business: Net sales increased due to increases in distributed profit from the film production committee and box office revenue and other factors. However, operating profit decreased due to factors such as a decrease in the gross profit rate and an increase in SG&A expenses, which are attributable to the impact of the sales mix of the titles.
Digital Business: Net sales decreased due to reasons such as a decrease in sales of digital video distribution and fan club sales. Meanwhile, operating profit increased because of, for example, a decrease in expenses relating to digital video distribution.
Other Businesses: Sales and profit increased because of reasons such as the Avex Group's production of an anime event in Saudi Arabia.

Progress of avex vision 2027 Medium-term Management Plan

In the fiscal year ended March 2023, the first year of avex vision 2027 Medium-term Management Plan, we are steadily sowing seeds for the achievement of the Medium-term Management Plan, such as the development of IP and the strengthening of the structure for overseas expansion. Some of these seeds are clearly growing. To solidify this trend, our investment should accelerate during this stage.

We will build a business that grows over the medium and long term and will seek to unfailingly achieve our targets: operating profit of 15 billion yen and ROE at 15% in the fiscal year ending March 2027.

The following is a link to a summary of the avex vision 2027 Medium-term Management Plan.

Promoting sustainability activities unique to an entertainment company

To fulfill our responsibility to help achieve a sustainable society as an entertainment company, we have identified material issues consisting of three key themes and seven individual items, and formulated a sustainability policy.

We seek to achieve a sustainable society by, for example, establishing a department dedicated to the promotion of sustainability, increasing employee awareness toward the realization of a sustainable society maximizing the advantages of an entertainment company, collaborating with and providing social experiences to the next generation, strengthening partnerships with local communities and promoting the next-generation of smart live concerts.

The following is a link to our sustainability initiatives.

Forecast for the Fiscal Year Ending March 2024 and Shareholder Return

Regarding the fiscal year ending March 2024, the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic will decrease and the market environment is expected to recover. But we will add to investments in IP creation to achieve the goals stated in the Medium-term Management Plan. For this reason, we project operating profit and profit attributable to owners of parent to be 2 billion yen and 2.2 billion yen*, respectively.

We have a payout policy of maintaining a consolidated payout ratio of at least 35% and paying an annual dividend of at least 50 yen per share. For the fiscal year ended March 2023, we offered an annual dividend of 50 yen per share. For the fiscal year ending March 2024, we are planning to pay an annual dividend of 50 yen per share in accordance with this policy.

*The full-year consolidated financial results forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2024 was revised on May 25, 2023.
